Acorn Fund Helps Salem Student Miracle Smith Expand Her Horizons

Our foundation’s Acorn Fund program makes investments in college savings accounts for Salem City students, and they can use that money for a wide range of educational purposes.

Here’s one of our favorite recent examples: study abroad classes in Spain.

That’s what Miracle Smith chose to do with the $1,000 she had in her Acorn Fund account this past spring. A junior at Lincoln University, she went to Burgos, an historic city in northern Spain.

“It was so culturally different,” she said. “I’ve never seen anything like that.”

Smith earned nine credits from taking Spanish classes over the course of five weeks. Combined with advanced placement credits she earned in high school, she now plans to graduate from college a year early. She is currently a Pan-Africana studies and criminal justice double major, and after graduating she plans to attend law school.

“I’m really grateful for the whole experience,” she said.
