City of Salem Honors Forman S. Acton with Proclamation

In February, City of Salem Mayor Charles Washington, Jr., celebrated our Foundation's namesake, Dr. Forman S. Acton, with a special proclamation honoring his legacy on the four-year anniversary of his passing.

Afterwards, we spoke with the Mayor about his feelings on why education is so important for Salem City students and what Dr. Acton's lasting legacy will be in Salem City. Here’s our Q&A with Mayor Washington. Dr. Forman S. Acton always said his education is what made him successful.

How important is it to you that young people in your town have access to the same educational experiences that all other students do?

As Dr. Acton did, I too believe education is the foundation to obtaining success. I believe education equips students with knowledge that allows them to create business or be gainfully employed and drive economic growth in their communities while creating wealth for their families. It's imperative that our students be given the same educational experiences that other students receive so our students can be equipped academically and financially to take an active role in rebuilding Salem.

The Forman S. Acton Educational Foundation also has its Acorn fund to help families in Salem City start saving for college early. As Mayor and a father, why is it important to you that Salem City residents begin thinking about college as early as possible?

As a parent it's my heart's desire to see not only my children succeed in life but every child that is a part of the Ram Family. While I believe education is the cornerstone of success I know the cost associated with the opportunity to receive a secondary education is extremely high. It's important to make financial preparations for our children early as not to limit the opportunities our children have to receive a quality education free from the limitation of a parent's ability to pay for tuition.

Is there anything else you’d like Salem City residents to know about Dr. Forman S. Acton and his legacy in Salem?

Dr. Acton's donation was given out of compassion and love for his community. His generosity demonstrates that their are still good and thoughtful people in this world. We should try on a daily basis to emulate the compassion and love Dr. Acton has shown and in doing so our lives will be meaningful and our actions will too leave a legacy worth talking about just like Dr. Acton's.

We thank Mayor Washington for his support of the Forman S. Acton Educational Foundation and the City of Salem for honoring Forman’s legacy with a wonderful proclamation.
