Free College Experience Available for All High School Students in Salem City! Apply by April 30th
Coming this July, high school students in Salem City will have an incredible opportunity to experience college life, earn college credit and get valuable advice on finding a job after college graduation.
Rowan University’s STEAM Academy offers high school students instruction and presentations given by university faculty in a number of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses. With three different programs tracks—one for incoming freshmen who just completed eighth grade and two different programs for students who will be sophomores, juniors and seniors this fall—the program is a great way to experience a taste of what’s to come after high school and get a tremendous advantage in the college application process.
The best news for any current or incoming high school student who lives in Salem City or attends Salem High School is that the Forman S. Acton Educational Foundation will provide scholarships to cover all tuition and transportation for any Salem City student accepted into the STEAM Academy at Rowan University.
More benefits of the program include:
- Three transferable college credits for sophomores, juniors and seniors.
- Special workshops offering career advice and resume creation.
- Standardized test preparation, including PSAT and SAT.
- Leadership training.
- Opportunity to experience what it’s like to live, eat and learn on a real college campus.
- Field trips to fun and different locations in South Jersey and Pennsylvania. Past trips have included Franklin Institute, Edelman Fossil Park and Hershey Park.
STEAM Academy will take place from July 8 - July 27, and all interested students must apply before April 30, 2018. For those that do, Rowan will review applications and determine who is accepted. The Foundation will then automatically cover the tuition and transportation cost for any student accepted into the STEAM Academy who will be attending Salem High School or lives in Salem City and attends another public high school.
This is the fourth year we have offered to pay students’ tuition for the three-week program, and the first year we have promoted the tuition offer for ALL high school students who live in Salem City, not just those who attend Salem High School. The cost for this program ranges from $800 to $3,575 depending on which aspect of the program students choose to participate. Since 2015, we’ve paid tuition for 39 Salem students to attend the program.
“My daughter Mackenzie has gone to STEAM the last 2 years. It has been an amazing experience, and she grew so much as a person this year!” said Karen Johnson, mother of Mackenzie Johnson, a student at Salem High School. “She wouldn't have been able to take advantage of this opportunity if not for the Forman S. Acton Foundation, and we are so grateful.”
