Catching Up With Kaiana Hickman!
Forman Scholar Kaiana Hickman graduated from Tuskegee University in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Kaiana plans to attend graduate school at UTHealth, where she will continue her studies while preparing for the MCAT. Her goal is to earn a competitive score and apply to medical school to pursue her dream of becoming an OB-GYN. We recently caught up with Kaiana to learn more about her college experience and her plans for the future.
How did you get involved at Tuskegee?
During my time in college, I was actively involved in the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS), which allowed me to connect with other students pursuing careers in healthcare and participate in events focused on professional development and community service. I also held a work-study position in the campus Game Room, where I helped manage recreational activities and created a welcoming space for students to relax and socialize.
How did the Forman Acton Foundation support you throughout your college journey?
The Forman Acton Foundation supported me throughout my college journey by providing both financial assistance and invaluable mentorship. Their support helped relieve the burden of tuition and other expenses, allowing me to focus on my academics. The mentorship and encouragement I received also played a key role in keeping me motivated and confident as I worked toward my goals. Their belief in me inspired me to persevere, and I’m grateful for the community they provided that made me feel supported every step of the way.
How did you overcome adversity and the challenges of college?
I overcame many of the adversities and challenges of college through prayer and therapy. Leaning on my faith gave me strength during difficult times, and therapy provided a safe space to process my emotions and develop healthy coping strategies. Both helped me stay grounded, focused and resilient throughout my college journey. Facing these challenges taught me resilience and the importance of asking for help when needed, which I believe are crucial skills for both personal growth and my future medical career.
How do you plan on applying the lessons you’ve learned from college to the betterment of your community?
I plan to apply the lessons I’ve learned in college by being a voice of guidance and support within my community. I want to share knowledge and resources, especially around health, education and personal development that others may not have access to at home. By uplifting and informing those around me, I hope to inspire positive change and help create a more empowered, informed and connected community. I believe that giving back is essential, and I’m committed to making a meaningful impact where it matters most.
Why are organizations such as the Forman Acton Foundation so important?
Organizations like the Forman Acton Foundation are incredibly important because they provide vital support to students who may not be financially equipped or who are first-generation college students. They offer more than just financial aid – they offer hope, opportunity and a fresh start. Being a Forman Scholar has meant having a community that believes in my potential and has walked alongside me throughout my academic journey. In the future, I plan to remain involved with the Foundation by mentoring younger Scholars, sharing my experiences and giving back in any way I can. I want to help others the same way the Foundation helped me, by being a source of encouragement, guidance and inspiration.
