Forman Scholar Kaiana Hickman Plans to Translate Passion for Medicine into Opportunity to Serve and Support Others

Kaiana Hickman may have only just graduated from high school, but the Forman Scholar is already looking ahead to the day she can officially add two important letters to the end of her last name: MD. With aspirations to eventually train as an OBGYN, Kaiana is first set to attend Tuskegee University and earn an undergraduate degree in biology on a pre-med track.

“I know I haven’t even completed my first college course yet, but I’m already thinking about medical school,” Kaiana said. “My ultimate goal is to return to Salem and give back to my hometown community in some way, whether that’s by opening my own practice or providing OBGYN support to mothers in need. Considering Salem lacks a local hospital that provides maternity services, I see an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of my neighbors and fellow residents.”

As Kaiana looks to her future, she feels bittersweet about the prospect of leaving her hometown, if only for a few years. She owes so much to the family members, educators and mentors who have guided, encouraged and challenged her up to this point in her life.

“My experience at Salem High School was unlike anything else. From my academic courses to the outstanding support I received from my teachers, I always felt empowered to push myself and strive to make it to the next level,” Kaiana said. “Along the way, I picked up countless lessons and words of wisdom that I will carry with me as I embark upon my college journey and begin to venture into the world of adulthood.”

While a bit nervous about moving so far away from home, Kaiana is eager to expand her horizons and push herself out of her comfort zone as a Tuskegee student.

“The college experience is an important time for exploration, discovery and growth. I know there are so many opportunities just waiting for me in Alabama, and it will be up to me to take advantage of all that the next few years have to offer,” Kaiana said.

Kaiana made the most of her experience at Salem High both in and out of the classroom. While she was involved heavily in academics and the school’s Ambassadors Club, she also excelled in softball, cheer, and track and field. This year, the track and field team even advanced to the New Jersey State Championships.

For Kaiana, the honor of being named a Forman Scholar extends beyond simple recognition. She says the opportunity will allow her to advance her passions, accelerate her learning and set herself up for a future dedicated to community development. In fact, she hopes to one day emulate the Foundation’s model of service and support.

“This program has been so helpful for my family. From the scholarship money to the guidance and support, it’s taken some of the pressure off of my mom as a single parent,” Kaiana said. “I recognize how beneficial this program is and has been for so many members of this community, and as I continue on my professional journey, I look forward to giving back to my hometown as it has given me so much to be thankful for.”
