Forman Scholar Madeline Grusemeyer Determined to Achieve in Nursing Field and in Life

Madeline Grusemeyer has never been one to shy away from a challenge. As a member of Salem High’s field hockey and swim teams, she’s used to competing in high-stakes environments at the highest levels. But now, Madeline’s indomitable spirit will face a new test: college. In true athlete fashion, the Forman Scholar has three words to share as she approaches the start of her college career: Bring it on.

In the fall, Madeline will begin her study of nursing at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). She felt at home from the first moment she stepped foot on the school’s campus in Ewing Township.

“I didn’t tour that many colleges during my initial search, so TCNJ definitely stood out,” Madeline said. “I almost instantly fell in love with all aspects of the school: the campus, the students, the vibe. Its nursing program is also exceptional and is proven to set students up for success in the medical field and beyond. Overall, I was just really impressed.”

Madeline has her sights set on eventually becoming a labor and delivery nurse, following in the footsteps of her grandmother. It’s a career choice fitting for someone with a habit of helping others. Over the past few years, Madeline has spent countless hours tutoring second graders at Salem’s John Fenwick Academy in subjects ranging from reading comprehension to math. And at TCNJ, she hopes to join the Bonner Institute, a program where students pledge to complete 300 hours of community service each school year.

“I’ve always been passionate about serving my community, and I look forward to continuing that type of work at the collegiate level,” Madeline said.

As a college student, Madeline is aiming to continue her track record of high marks and hard work.

“I definitely want to graduate with honors,” Madeline said. “I’ve earned good grades throughout my years in school, and I want to keep that up. I know that with the right planning and preparation, I can avoid slacking off.”

With a passion for field hockey, Madeline says what she’ll miss most about Salem is the fall season.

“I love the fall season and all that comes with it,” Madeline said. “Field hockey, football games, homecoming. There’s always so much to do at that time of year.”

Madeline counts herself as lucky to have made close relationships throughout her time at Salem High. She particularly credits Kristin Unger, one of her English teachers, as being a solid rock.

“To me, she’s a motherly figure, always there and always willing to talk about anything,” Madeline said. “She’s someone you always want in your corner. I think it’s always important to bond with teachers so you know you can always count on someone if something were to happen.”

With the support of the Forman Acton Foundation, Madeline is confident she has the resources necessary to achieve her goals.

“The Foundation and its staff are exceptional and always make sure that students are taken care of,” Madeline said. “My brother is a Forman Scholar as well, so for many years I’ve been able to witness firsthand the support the Foundation provides our community and the compassion the organization has for Salem’s students.”

Of course, despite fond memories made in her hometown, Madeline is eager to begin the next chapter of her life.

“I’m looking forward to setting out on my own path,” Madeline said. “There are going to be moments over the next few years when I will have to try something out for the first time. I may not always know how to get it right the first time. But sometimes, you just have to jump in feet-first and figure it out. I’ll probably fail many times along the way. But with a support system like the Forman Acton Foundation cheering me on, as long as I get back up when I fall and try again, everything will turn out just fine.”
