Forman Scholar Patrick Irvine Taking his Dream to New Heights

Growing up in a family full of pilots, Patrick Irvine spent a large portion of his childhood seated on the passenger side of an airplane. Today, however, the Forman Scholar and Salem native has taken command of the aircraft he travels in, as he prepares to fly solo en route to a career in the United States Air Force.

“I have nothing but immense respect for the men and women of our Armed Forces, and the selfless patriotism of those in uniform has inspired me to also serve my country,” Patrick said. “It would be an honor to join the Air Force and apply my passion for flight to the defense of our nation.”

Patrick is due to receive his private pilot’s license at the end of the summer. But before he reaches his final destination, he has a four-year layover planned in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he intends to study aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Applying to Embry-Riddle was a simple choice for Patrick. His uncle and brother had both previously visited the school and contemplated attending. With Embry-Riddle's strong academic programs and a robust ROTC program, Patrick believes he will be well-positioned for both collegiate and post-collegiate success.

“I knew Embry-Riddle was the school for me from almost the minute I stepped onto campus,” Patrick said. “My hope is that my future experiences both in and out of the classroom will prepare me well not only for future military service but also a possible role as a commercial pilot once I return to civilian life.”

Over the past four years, when Patrick wasn’t flying thousands of feet above the ground, he could be found racing across it. A star athlete, Patrick played soccer for Salem High and competed for the school in track and field events. He also devoted his time to Student Council, as well as Salem’s Ambassadors and Interact clubs.

Patrick found equal success inside the classroom. Despite enrolling in the challenging International Baccalaureate (IB) program that included advanced chemistry and music courses, his discipline and drive led him to excel. A fascination with the past made his history classes particularly enjoyable.

“From a young age, I’ve loved history and the United States’ involvement in numerous world events. I’m a really huge fan of documentaries, especially those involving the military and different conflicts,” said Patrick.

As Patrick prepares for takeoff toward his collegiate career, he recognizes that not everyone knows the exact college or career path that is right for them. To those students, he lends a simple piece of advice.

“Do your research. Explore colleges, their courses of study and any potential career paths they may lead to,” Patrick said. “The most important thing is to be open to any and all possibilities. You never know where your life may take you.”
