From the moment Jordan Galan learned how to put pen to paper, she knew she was destined to become a writer. Now the Forman Scholar is preparing to take her creative outlet to a new level as she prepares to study journalism at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). She’ll merge her passion for storytelling with her desire to understand the underpinnings of societal structures with a minor in sociology in hopes of becoming a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist.

“Every individual has a story that deserves to be heard, and I’ve always been fascinated by the amazing things seemingly ordinary people are able to accomplish in their lives,” said Jordan. “News today is saturated with coverage of negative stories. My goal as a future journalist is to shed light on the good because even in the most trying of times, hopeful and uplifting stories are out there just waiting to be discovered.”

Within minutes of stepping foot on TCNJ’s campus, Jordan knew she had discovered her home-away-from-home. For Jordan, TCNJ offers a compelling blend of strong academic programs, a vibrant campus life and a multitude of ways to get involved in the community. High up on Jordan’s freshman-year checklist is joining TCNJ’s softball club.

Jordan is no stranger to the softball diamond; she was a 4-year member of Salem High’s softball team. Off the field, Jordan immersed herself in a number of extracurricular activities, including sharpening her journalism skills as a reporter for the school newspaper and participating in the Future Business Leaders of America, the bowling team, the Junior Achievement program, the Academic League and the World Language Club.

Since moving to Salem at the age of five, Jordan has loved every minute she has spent in her tight-knit community. She is prepared to take the next step on her life journey, knowing the support her friends and neighbors have provided her will undoubtedly continue as she embarks on her newest endeavor.

“What I love most about Salem is how committed we all are to each other,” said Jordan. “Guided by kindness and compassion, everyone is always looking for ways to uplift others in the course of their daily life.”

Jordan also enjoys instrumental music in her free time. She often finds herself inventing new melodies on her electric or acoustic guitar and developing songs of her own.

As Jordan prepares to move into TCNJ, she understands how stressful the college search process can be. For those students still in high school, Jordan’s best advice is to keep an open mind and remain confident that there is a campus community best suited for you.

“I sincerely believe that, for those who are interested in pursuing a college degree, there is a college or university that best suits everyone,” said Jordan. “Research is the key to unlocking what campus is right for you. Don’t worry – you’ll end up where you’re supposed to be.”
