From her earliest days as a student, Renee Watson considered the classroom to be her second home, a place where dedicated educators inspired her passion for learning. Their dedication is what continues to fuel her drive to make an equally momentous difference in the lives of others. The Forman Scholar will take the next step to make her dreams a reality when she begins classes this fall at Vassar College, where she will study literature to prepare for her future as a high school English teacher.

“Growing up, I always wanted to be a lawyer. But, after having the opportunity to work with children at a local daycare, I realized that my true passion was educating children and helping them discover their passions,” said Renee.

While Renee was motivated by all of her educators during her academic career, it was her experience in Kristin Unger’s English class during her senior year that solidified Renee’s decision to become a teacher. The class also helped Renee discover her love of storytelling, writing and literature, especially the classics and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies.

Renee is thrilled to begin her studies at Vassar, where she will meet an intellectually rigorous curriculum covering the historical, critical and creative elements of literature and language. The collegiate experience that awaits Renee will no doubt help mold her into a leader in the next generation of inspiring educators.

“For me, the collegiate experience presents more than just the opportunity to learn,” said Renee. “At Vassar, I’ll have the chance to interact with individuals from all over the world, pursue my passions and make some lifelong friends in the process.”

As a student at Salem High, Renee enjoyed immersing herself in extracurricular activities.  Aside from responsibilities as a Student Council Class Officer, National Honor Society Student, and Tri-M Music Honors Society Scholar, Renee played doubles for Salem High’s tennis team. Despite her busy schedule, Renee always made time to participate in one of her favorite traditions: Salem High’s annual homecoming.

Growing up in Salem has taught Renee valuable life experiences that she plans to carry with her in future endeavors.

“I’ve enjoyed tremendous support from my family, peers, educators and the Salem community at every step of my journey,” said Renee. “I’ve learned to be resilient in the face of adversity, and I’m ready to overcome any future challenges that may stand in my way as I work to achieve my goals in the future.”
