Alexandrea Matias will be attending Rutgers University-New Brunswick this coming fall, where she’ll be studying theater with a minor in Spanish. Learn more about Alexandrea and the plans she has for her college career.

Why did you decide to study theater?

I selected this major because theater became a place of belonging for me in high school. I joined theater when I was just a freshman with a few close friends from middle school, but I quickly made so many strong friendships with students across all grade levels. Pursuing theater wasn’t my initial plan, as it is known to be a challenging and competitive industry, but I realized I wanted to pursue a path that felt true to who I am. I would rather take a risk than wonder what my career could have been. My future goals are to go to college, get accepted into the Mason Gross School of the Arts, dedicate myself to my training, and pursue a career in the performing arts. Whether I’m cast in a lead role or in the ensemble, every opportunity brings me closer to where I want to be.

How were you involved in high school?

In high school, I was an active participant in clubs, community service and sports. I was involved in Student Council, Choir, Ram Theater, Tri-M Music Honor Society, National Honor Society and Ram Singers. I also played softball all four years and managed the tennis team during my senior year. I volunteered regularly, usually participating in road cleanups and other club-organized events.

What is your favorite memory from high school?

My favorite memory of high school was graduation but not because I was finished with school. Since freshman year, I’ve made it my goal to be a role model for younger, incoming students. At graduation, when I finished throwing my cap, I went straight to my underclassmen friends, and I saw them crying. In that moment, I realized just how much of an impact I had on them. I never knew how much they cared for me or how much of a difference I had made in their lives, so seeing them proud of me confirmed that I accomplished what I had set out to do.

What does higher education mean to you?

College is important because it helps you discover your passions and allows you to explore different directions you may want to take in life. Beyond academics, college teaches you independence and responsibility. You have to remain focused on your academics, responsibilities and goals. To me, higher education means pushing yourself to grow, pursue what you love, and make yourself and those around you proud.

How has the Forman Acton Foundation contributed to your personal, professional and academic growth?

The Forman Acton Foundation has contributed to my growth by giving me the opportunity to pursue my dreams. College is expensive, and receiving this scholarship has motivated me to continue working hard toward my goals. They have provided so much financial and emotional assistance and have helped ease the transition into college. To me, being a Forman Scholar means that my hard work has been recognized, and I have the chance to inspire and lead others by example.
