Get To Know Forman Scholar Sierra Sakaguchi!

Sierra Sakaguchi will be attending the University of South Carolina this coming fall, where she’ll be majoring in physics with a minor in engineering. Learn more about Sierra and the plans she has for her college career.

What interests you about the field of physics?

I selected this major because I have always loved the math and science behind the medical field, but not the direct patient interaction. Medical physics offers the perfect balance, allowing me to contribute to healthcare through research and technology. The minor in engineering complements my path toward becoming a physicist, so it made sense to pursue it. My ultimate goal is to obtain my Ph.D. and become a medical physicist.

How were you involved in high school?

I was a very active member in student leadership and extracurricular activities. I was the president of the National Honor Society, class treasurer and a member of Student Council. I was also a cheerleader, a band member and in Academic League. I also did a lot of volunteer work through the Miss America Opportunity and worked with organizations such as the International Marrow Donation Program (NMDP), Meals on Wheels and Project Thanksgiving. After school, I worked as a waitress at Mama Mia’s in Salem.

How do you plan to make the most of your college experience?

As a Capstone Scholar, I’m already academically involved in my college community. Next year, I plan to audition for the Carolina Coquettes, the university’s football dance team, as well as participate in sorority recruitment in the fall. I am excited to build strong friendships and get involved on campus.

How do you plan on making a difference in the world?

As a future medical physicist, I hope to do research that can improve the quality and safety of medical treatments. Whether that is through developing new technologies or refining current practices, I want to make a difference in the advancement of healthcare and improve patient outcomes.

What does being a Forman Scholar mean to you?

The Forman Acton Foundation has helped keep me motivated throughout high school, even during challenging times when I felt burnt out. To me, being a Forman Scholar means committing to excellence and staying dedicated to my academic and personal growth. It serves as a reminder to continue to work hard, stay focused and always keep pushing toward my goals.
