Get to Know Forman Scholar Karima Davenport-White!
Karima Davenport-White is headed to Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she plans to study forensic pathology in the hopes of becoming a future medical examiner. Learn more about Karima and the plans she has for her college career.
What initially attracted you to Coppin State?
Among other things, I selected the school because it has an outstanding Division I track and field program and amazing academic programs in my field of study. There’s even a medical postgraduate school on campus that I can apply to after receiving my undergraduate degree in biology and pre-med, so I can continue my advanced studies right at Coppin State without changing schools.
How did you stay involved in high school?
I stayed active as the treasurer of student government, the historian of the National Honor Society, and a member of Student Council, Ambassadors, and Ram Theater. I also played on the girls soccer and girls basketball teams, as well as ran track in the winter and spring (I’d like to continue running track in college). Outside of school, I volunteer at my church by helping with clothing and food drives in the wintertime.
How do you plan to make the most of your college experience?
In addition to joining the track and field team, I plan on joining a few clubs and organizations to keep me busy outside of class. I hope all of these experiences, both inside and outside of the classroom, will allow me to gain new friends, life skills, knowledge and opportunities for growth. I’m looking forward to the personal change that comes from living away from home and navigating life on your own.
What does pursuing higher education mean to you?
College is so important because of the many ways the experience will prepare me for life and enable me to strive toward the person I want to be both now and in the future. Higher education will not only prepare me for a successful future but also enable me to access so many opportunities to improve my life and the life of my community. I want to make a difference in the world by having a positive impact on those around me, and college will provide me with the tools to be that change.
How has the Forman Acton Foundation contributed to your growth as a person and as a student?
The Foundation has been so gracious in supplying the resources and one-on-one help I’ve needed to achieve ongoing personal, professional and academic growth. It’s not easy moving away from home and beginning a new chapter of life on your own. But with the Foundation’s staff by my side, I have no doubt the next few years will be full of success.
