Get to Know Forman Scholar Morgan Johnson!
With a dual interest in education and the environment, Morgan Johnson is melding her passions by studying secondary education with a specialization in environmental science at Stockton University in Galloway Township, New Jersey. Learn more about Morgan and the plans she has for her college career.
Why did you decide to study education and environmental science at Stockton?
I selected Stockton because from the moment I first stepped foot on campus, I felt like the school was best suited for my style of learning and would also provide me with plenty of opportunities to connect with new friends and classmates. My dream career would involve returning to Salem after earning a master’s degree and educating the young people in my community about agriculture.
How did you stay involved during high school?
From sports to music to service, I stayed pretty active in high school! I held a few leadership positions in sports, serving as captain of both the varsity softball and varsity field hockey teams. I also served as president of the Tri-M music honors society, as well as performed with Ram Singers and Ram Theatre. Finally, I was involved with National Honors Society, Student Council and Ambassadors Club. I loved spending as much time as I could with my friends – prom weekend was one of my favorite high school memories!
Why is higher education so important?
College is so important to me because my parents never got the opportunity to complete degrees of their own. So, as a first-generation student, I want to work hard just as much for them as for me. A college degree can open so many doors – not just for me but for my entire family.
How do you plan to make the most of your college experience?
My goal is to meet lifelong friends and make lasting memories by joining as many clubs as possible and staying as active as I was in high school. I might also play softball. Through my coursework and my extracurriculars, I want to do all I can to benefit not only myself but also others around me. One day, I plan to return to my hometown and give back by teaching the next generation and instilling in them the importance of education.
How has the Forman Acton Foundation contributed to your growth as a person and as a student?
The Foundation has been such an asset in my life. The staff and other Scholars have helped me grow as a person by providing me with opportunities to meet and build relationships with new people. I’ve also been encouraged to focus on my classwork, seek help when I need it and also go the extra mile in keeping my grades up. I’m so happy to have them in my corner as I start my first semester of college.
