Yanderin Castellanos is on her way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she’ll study medical imaging at Thomas Jefferson University. Learn more about Yanderin and the plans she has for her college career.

Why have you decided to study medical imaging?

I’ve always been intrigued by medical technology and the ability to noninvasively peer inside the human body. For example, ultrasounds can be exciting, especially when you’re working with pregnant patients. It’s a thrilling moment to see someone’s baby growing and share in the parents’ joy and excitement. My goal is to eventually become a travel ultrasound technician, a role that will allow me to work with a variety of different patients across medical settings.

What is your favorite memory from high school?

I always loved spirit week and homecoming! Being selected to the homecoming court – and then named homecoming queen – was one of the most exciting things to happen during my time at SHS.

Why is higher education so important?

The college experience is essential because it’s not something you’re used to. College challenges you – in more ways than one – to step out of your comfort zone and take leaps of faith on your own. Sometimes, this newfound independence can be daunting, but in the long run, you end up benefiting from the experience. It’s always important to have a support system and people in your corner, but at the same time, there’s something to be said about the ability to strike out on your own and succeed.

How do you plan on making a difference in the world?

It may sound overly simplistic or cheesy, but I believe the world would be a much better place if people were kinder to one another. There’s too much hate and division in our world today. Whether it’s through my career or just in my personal life, I plan on always striving to make someone’s day by being nice and providing excellent care.

How has the Forman Acton Foundation contributed to your growth as a person and as a student?

The Foundation has immensely contributed to my life. The staff and my fellow Scholars have inspired me to persevere through whatever obstacles life may throw at me, pushing forward in my education no matter what.
