How were you involved in high school?
I was very involved throughout my high school career. I played a sport every season, including tennis, cheerleading and softball, which helped me stay active and build strong connections with teammates. I was involved in the Ambassadors Club, Ram Singers, Environmental Club, Student Council, Fashion Club and STEM Club, plus I was a Junior Rotarian. I was a member of the National Honor Society during my senior year, and I also served as vice president of my senior class. I participated in trash cleanups, community events and bookbag giveaways, and I was a mentor/leader for a girls' youth group in Salem. I also worked part-time at Dunkin’. Through all these experiences, I learned a lot about time management and resilience.
What is your favorite memory from high school?
My favorite high school memory was my IB trip to Barcelona, Spain. This trip meant so much to me because it felt like all the hard work that I had put into school was being acknowledged. Being able to spend time with my classmates in another country was unforgettable, and it brought us all so much closer. Exploring a new city and new culture together made this experience incredibly meaningful, and I wouldn’t change a single thing about it.
How do you plan to make the most of your time in college?
In college, I plan to join the club tennis team and the cheer team, and I’m excited to join various student organizations as well. One group I’m already interested in joining is W&L’s Student Association for Black Unity. Knowing that a predominantly white institution has a group like this for me makes me feel more confident and welcomed. I plan to make the most of my time by balancing my academics with building friendships and trying new experiences. Overall, I'm looking forward to being in a new environment and growing into adulthood on my own.
Why are college and the college experience so important?
College is important to me because it provides support and experiences to help me succeed personally and professionally. For me, failure is a real fear, so I view college as an important step toward building a secure and fulfilling future. The college experience is important because it allows young people to bloom into adulthood and create lasting memories. I see higher education as a representation of opportunity and the next level of growth beyond high school, and I am looking forward to making the most of it.
