Eithan McDonnell-Longo will be attending Rutgers University-New Brunswick this coming fall, where he’ll be majoring in history education. Learn more about Eithan and the plans he has for his college career.

Why did you select Rutgers?

I am attending Rutgers University–New Brunswick with a history education major because of its excellent teaching program. As an aspiring teacher, I wanted to learn from a program known for producing great educators. I admire so many of my teachers who also went to Rutgers, and I hope to follow in their footsteps.

How were you involved in high school?

Throughout high school, I played several sports, including baseball, soccer and wrestling. I was also a member of the Academic League, and I worked after school and volunteered my time with my school librarian to create and organize memorable events and activities for my peers, our biggest one being homecoming.

How are you planning to get involved in college?

In college, I plan to get involved by joining clubs that match my interests and help me connect with other people with similar interests. I want to make the most of my time by stepping out of my comfort zone. I am really looking forward to gaining independence, growing personally and academically, and building a strong foundation for my future.

What does higher education mean to you?

College is so important because it prepares you for the real world by teaching you both academic and life skills. It is a time for growth and learning, and allows you to develop the tools you need to succeed as an adult. To me, higher education means becoming more informed and knowledgeable so I can make a difference in other people’s lives, especially as a future educator.

How has the Forman Acton Foundation contributed to your personal, professional and academic growth?

The Forman Acton Foundation has allowed me to attend college without the stress of a financial burden. The Foundation has also helped me understand the value of giving back and being part of something bigger than myself. Being a Forman Scholar means everything to me, and it proves that I am becoming the person my younger self always hoped to be: accomplished, hard-working and dedicated. I am proud to carry these traits with me into my future.
