Get To Know Forman Scholar Mia Lopez!
Mia Lopez will be attending Kean University this coming fall, where she’ll be majoring in forensic science with a concentration in chemistry. Learn more about Mia and the plans she has for her college career.
What are your future career goals and aspirations?
I decided to study forensic science because I discovered a passion for chemistry while taking an IB chemistry course in high school. I have always been interested in working with law enforcement in some way, and everything just began to fall into place for me when I realized how chemistry could align with that path. In the future, I plan to earn my master’s degree in forensic science to become a competitive candidate for government positions, such as those within the FBI or DEA. At the very least, I would like to work in a crime lab where I can apply my skills to help solve cases and contribute to public safety.
How were you involved in high school?
During high school, I was involved in many clubs and activities. I did winter track my freshman year and managed the girls’ tennis team my senior year. I participated in many clubs, such as Student Council, Academic League, Environmental Club, STEM Club and more. I volunteered for the Salem Yuletide Tour, coffee houses, and the John Fenwick Academy’s Santa’s Workshop and art club. I was a hostess at a local diner during my freshman and sophomore years, and during the summers, I participated in the Summer Youth Employment Program for IT. This summer, I will continue the program in a new role working in the board office.
What are you looking forward to most about college?
In college, I would like to become a student ambassador and explore clubs related to my major. I want to integrate myself within the school community while staying focused on my academic and career goals. I plan to spend a lot of time exploring the new area I’ll be living in and creating a plan to stay on top of my schoolwork and studying. One of the things I am most excited about is going in with a fresh start—a chance to truly be myself to the fullest. I feel like this will allow me to branch out more than I did in high school, and it is an opportunity for new beginnings and personal growth.
Why are college and the college experience so important?
College is very important because it will provide me with the structure and support to help me transition into the professional world. College teaches responsibility and independence, especially after leaving home for the first time, where it can be easy to always rely on family. Higher education to me means choosing to become the best version of yourself and showing up every day with purpose and passion.
